Extension and Enrichment at BMSS

Readers Cup is a competition where teams of four students together read a set of books, and then compete with other schools or public library teams to answer quiz questions from the books.
BMSS are actively working with our two groups selected to attend Readers Cup. A group of four students from Year 6 and four students from Year 7 have been selected to join the challenge.  The Readers Cup competition challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books. Our regional competition is held on the 28th May, 2014.
§  R.A.P. (Raising Academic Performance)
This program is currently offered to selected students from Year 2-7. Year One students will join the program in Semester 2. Students are selected through a variety of measures including current Data and Teacher nomination. Students may be required to sit an examination for entry to some term topics.
Within this program; the learning environment and teaching strategies support student development by encouraging persistence, self-monitoring, and flexible attitudes to learning. Students are encouraged to develop and use higher order thinking skills such as critical, logical, reflective, metacognitive, and create thinking through their participation of extension programs that encompass challenging concepts at a faster classroom pace.
§  U2B NUMERACY – YEAR 4 and 5
At Buderim Mountain States School twenty-four Year 5 students have been privileged to participate in a 12 week online Web conferencing initiative. Year 5 students will completed their program on May 8th and twenty-four Year 4 students will begin on May 21st.
The U2B project is delivered online by Buderim Mountain State School in partnership with the Department of Education, Training and Employment’s North Coast Region and Brisbane School of Distance Education.
Project U2B is an extension program in numeracy. It is offered to students who already demonstrate proficiency in numeracy. It aims to help them progress “from good to great” and will further develop a student’s sense of confidence and achievement in numeracy, particularly in relation to problem-solving. U2B stands for Upper 2 Bands and students are selected because we believe they have the ability to reach the Upper 2 Bands in NAPLAN numeracy in the future.
Project U2B also provides a great opportunity for students to experience online learning, it includes the chance to connect and collaborate with students from other schools and an online teacher from a school in the North Coast Region.
